What is Neural Mobilization?

Neural mobilization, also known as neurodynamics or neuromobilization, is a technique used to treat pain and other symptoms in the nerves.

As with muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons, your nerves have to tolerate movement and load. Neurodynamic mobilization uses manual therapy techniques and specific exercises to help stress the neural tissues to improve pain, mobility, and functional tolerance.

When are neurodynamic treatments used?

Neurodynamic mobilization treatments are used in conjunction with manual therapy to help determine where your pain is originating from. Your physical therapist may perform neural tension tests to evaluate how the mobility of your nervous system is contributing to your symptoms.

Forms of Neural Mobilization

  • Nerve gliding/nerve flossing: gentle exercises aimed at moving the irritated nerves to reduce pain and improve your range of motion or tolerance to movement
  • Nerve tensioners: exercises that focus on elongating the nerve bed

How Neural Mobilization Affects Your Physical Therapy Results

Including neural mobilization exercises in your physical therapy treatment plan can help improve your mobility, increase your flexibility, and decrease pain. If you're experiencing pain, tingling, or numbness in your limbs, neurodynamic mobilization techniques could be the answer you're looking for.
